Long before I ever thought of writing this book, my parents would tell me little anecdotes about my grandparents. On the few occasions I saw them in person, I wondered about the full extent of their pasts. I finally asked my grandparents to tell me their story. My grandfather was born in 1945, my grandmother in 1949. Both grew up in central Sichuan Province in China. A Small Voice Singing is a story of their lives, loosely narrating true events I discovered over the years, beginning in my grandparents' early childhood to after they met. It is a blend of how my grandparents recalled their pasts, merged with how I myself imagined the events and my roots, focusing on key events and symbols throughout their lives. There are some moments in the long timeline that I am uncertain about, or even they themselves cannot recall, but the barebones remains historically grounded. It is my hope that this book conveys the charm of the absurd and the magic of life's little moments that make a person. In learning about my background and ancestry, I have come to know more of myself and where I came from. I encourage whoever reads this book to seek similar life stories from those they love, all of which are a wonder of humanity and worthy of being told. I am certain, if we look deeper into the past, we will find that there were in fact many, many small voices singing.
