Some of the short stories in the collection shed light on various aspects of life in a post-communist state in South Eastern Europe during its long and painful transition from a totalitarian system into a facade democracy and a faulty market economy. Other short stories deal with severe social prejudice in third world countries or with charity, done by gifted children in advanced EU countries. The lives of the main protagonists in most of these tales are struck by a a tragic turnaround of fate, involving a long-suffering readjustment to a new challenging situation.
