This collection of short stories reveals various aspects of life in a post-communist state in South Eastern Europe during its long and painful transition from a totalitarian system into a facade democracy and a faulty market economy. The lives of the main protagonists of these tales all face a fateful change which puts their existence in great jeopardy. However, they struggle fiercely to survive and endure the impending evil. In some cases they sacrifice their lives in the name of a public cause. In other cases they courageously fight the odds to the very last inch.
