In Togo, colonial rule meant that agriculture was essentially geared towards the production of export crops. At independence, agricultural policies sought to reorientate the sector so that it could ensure the country's food self-sufficiency through agricultural modernisation, in this case the launch of the Green Revolution in 1977 for a period of 5 years.
