A glance at the list of names appended to. This account will be enough to show that the characterization of the band of kindred spirits that honored William Winter is not overdone. Absence or aloofness were conspicuous only in two cases. No theatre manager in the United States sent greetings or was at the board. 'the New York Tribune', which he served for forty-four years, did not share in the ceremonies, except in the 'fashion of a message from the Proof Room of that newspaper. To those familiar with the manuscript of thefamous writer this, nevertheless, spoke volumes of good will. But owing to the preeeminence in their callings of those who did share in the celebration these omissions were scarcely noticed.
