While the book could easily be considered a simple story of one man's life and experiences, it also tells the larger story of what it was really like to be a Jew during several different periods of Soviet history, including the rules of Stalin, Khrushchev, and Brezhnev. Rather than broadly philosophize about the cause and effects of Communism, the author instead shows the human cost of living under a totalitarian regime and brings to it his own personal experiences and acquaintances.
