Are sometimes tempted to assume, that restlessness is greater than it has been at many past periods of our social history may perhaps be questioned. Each age is apt to exaggerate its own difficulties and troubles, and our present religious difficulties and troubles doubtless loom larger in our eyes than they will appear to our children's children to have really been. At the same time there can be no question that doubt and inquiry and a deep-seated anxiety. About the religious doctrines which have been handed down to us are not the least prominent characteristics of our generation. The times are not indeed positively infidel. Quite apart from the wide field which Christianity can claim as her own.
