The 5th century is the century of the barbarian invasions, already since the 3rd century B.C., groups of barbarian peoples had arrived in central and southern Europe from the North: converted to Christianity (in its Arian version) in the 5th century were the Ostrogoths in Eastern Europe and the Visigoths in Western Europe. Rome was conquered and besieged in 410 by the Visigoth Alaric, a fact that produced a strong impression throughout the Roman Empire, for its part, the Huns (after being expelled from China) advanced westward and reached Europe, ending with the Ostrogothic Kingdom (375), its leader Attila made great conquests (c430) until he was defeated in the battle of the Catalonian Fields (451) and died two years later. After the death of St. Augustine (430) the Vandals occupied Hippo and Africa and established (442) the first Germanic Kingdom of the Western Roman Empire. In 445 they conquered Rome, destroying it (" Vandalism ").
