While the Catholic religion was barred out of Massachusetts in Colonial days, it was steadily spreading in other parts Of the New World. In the North under the protection of the French ¿ag, the heroic Jesuit Missionaries were converting the Indians in the forests Of Maine, along the banks of the St. Lawrence, and on the shores Of the Great Lakes. In the South, the zealous English Jesuit Fathers White and Altham, who landed with the Catholic Pilgrims on the Shores Of Maryland in 1634, labored successfully among the Indians and Colonists; and the enterprising Franciscan and Dominican Fathers carried the blessings of Christian civilization farther South, from Florida to the shores of the Pacific. To Massachusetts must be accorded the discredit of resisting the establishment Of the Catholic Church long after it had gained a foothold in almost every other place in America.
