The debate started with the discovery of a layer of clay present throughout the world, and situated right at the boundary of the Cretaceous and (more recent) Paleocene rocks, marking a line between these stages where the fossils suddenly changed in new niches . In the clay, there was a sharp increase in iridium-an element of the rare earth elements in Earth's crust. That suggested an extraterrestrial visitor . In Egypt , Deep marine origin of more complete exposed sediments of uppermost Cretaceous / early Danian ( early Paleocene) in Southern Sinai , that layer of clay is exposed and formerly present those boundary . These rocks were laid down nearly 66 million years ago during the extinction event.
