In Indian society, the status of women has not remained static but changes with the change of societal norms from time to time. In ancient India, women enjoyed equal status with men in all fields of life. But in the Medival period, the status of women went down considerably. She was considered to be inferior to men. Her position became very miserable. The position of women in modern India has changed considerably. Her position in modern Indian society is equal to that of men, socially, economically, educationally politically & legally.Domestic Violence is a phenomenon that starts at conception and carries on through their entire life span. Pre-birth selection and consequently infanticide, continue discrimination by way of access to adequate food, proper medical facilities, the burden of housework, care of a sibling, occurrence of sexual assault within the family and millions of Indian women face severe harassment due to unfulfilled dowry. The Book has evaluated the impact of major legislation including the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 on the positions of the women suffering from domestic violence in light of the socio-cultural realities of Indian society.
