O knihe
Expansive soils are highly problematic by virtue of their innate capacity to undergo volume changes corresponding to changes in moisture regime. They swell and shrink respectively when water is absorbed in rainy seasons and when water evaporates in summers. As a result, lightly loaded civil engineering infrastructure founded in these soils are severely damaged. Many innovative foundation practices have been suggested for mitigating the problems posed by expansive soils. Some of these techniques are physical and chemical alteration and special foundation techniques in the form of tension-resistant foundations. This monograph presents experimental work on the effective use of lime and fly ash in reducing swelling and shrinkage of expansive soils. The tests conducted to find out swell potential and swelling pressure and other important engineering properties of the expansive clay samples blended with lime and fly ash have yielded useful results.
