Excerpt: "Love the Way You Lie" is a song by American rapper Eminem, from his seventh studio album, Recovery (2010). It was released as the album's second single on August 9, 2010, through Interscope Records. The song features vocals by Bajan singer Rihanna; the duo's chemistry was widely praised. Lyrically, the song is about someone whom he loves but the girl does not love him back as Eminem dedicated this song to people who have been through a bad relationship, incorporating themes of domestic violence. Eminem and his manager originally reached out to Rihanna when he heard the track that da Kid produced, as Eminem felt that only Rihanna could execute the part perfectly. The song was written by Alex da Kid, Eminem and Skylar Grey, while the former collaborated with Makeba Riddick for mastering and production. Recording sessions took place at Effigy Studios in Michigan and Sun Studios in Dublin. The finished version is a mid-tempo hardcore hip hop track and is sung over an instrumental consisting of acoustic guitars and piano. It has been covered and remixed by a multitude of other recording artists, including The Pretty Reckless, Cher Lloyd, Ariana Grande, Alex Feather Akimov and Rudiger. A sequel to the song titled "Love the Way You Lie (Part II)", was recorded and released on Rihanna's album, Loud; it is mainly narrated from the female perspective, unlike the original. "Love the Way You Lie" was met with positive reviews, in which many critics praised Rihanna's vocal performance and da Kid's production. The song claimed the top spot on 26 charts worldwide, peaking at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks, giving Eminem his fourth number-one hit on the chart and Rihanna her seventh. The single had sold over five million copies in the United States alone and became the best-selling single of 2010 in the United Kingdom. It has earned Eminem six awards and seventeen other nominations around the world, with nominations for Grammy Awards, Billboard
