This book breaks new ground in several ways. One, it is the first textbook of ethics which features an analytic reflection on present-day social maladies that have revolutionized human life and values in contemporary Philippine setting. The central focus of analysis revolves around the moral issues of graft and corruption, cybersex or internet sex, hazing, bullying, cheating, human trafficking and smuggling, drug abuse, illegal drugs and addiction, smoking, air and water pollution, sexual harassment, rape, extrajudicial killings and summary execution. Two, to encourage critical reflection, which is of paramount importance in moral discernment and decision-making, twelve ethical schools of thought, founded and formulated by great ethical thinkers throughout the ages, are presented and discussed, namely: hedonism, stoicism, Epicureanism, utilitarianism, situation ethics, mightism or power ethics, deontologisml or duty ethics, natural law ethics, humanistic ethics, pragmatism, Rawls's theory of justice, and ethical relativism.
