Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Reports of the Boston City Hospital, 1898: Ninth Series

The accompanying table shows the relative frequency of diphtheria in males and females. It will be seen from this table that, while the susceptibility to the disease is greater in females than In males, the death-rate in the former is con siderably lower than in the latter. There seems to be no satisfactory explanation of this fact. In the earlier years of life sex certam can have no in¿uence on the susceptibility to disease, neither can it have any efiect on the resisting power of the individual. In the first five years of life the difference between the death-rate of the sexes is very marked, being per cent. In males, and per cent. In females. From five to ten years the death-rate in males is per cent., and that of females is 7; from ten to fifteen yeais the rate for males is While that of females of a correspond ing age, comprising forty-nine cases, the death-rate is 0. Over fifteen years of age the death-rate for males is 8 per cent., while that of females is 4 per cent. A marked difier ence. Lennox Browne in his work, entitled Diphtheria and its Associates, gives an analysis of cases, in which he states that the percentage of mortality in males under five years of age is in females Between five and ten years, males per cent., females between ten and fifteen years, males females and over fifteen years, males females per cent. The percentage of mortality at the South Department of the whole number of males is and that of females, as compared with that of per cent. In males and per cent. In females in Brome's table.
