O knihe

A puzzler. It might - just might - go over, and become the rage. On the other hand, it may be noticed by the critics seeking something different, and by the anti-fascists seeking ammunition, and by the public interested in modern Italy - and otherwise make no stir in the surface. Easy enough reading, and entertaining in a unique way in spots, though tragedy and comedy rub elbows. It is the story of a tiny village in the southern Appenines that rebelled futilely for a moment against fascist Rome. And it is the story of two of its sons, and the sacrifice they chose as their way to aid the peasants who were being crushed by the mighty machine through crooked water deals, starvation taxes, professional politicians, and their own abysmal ignorance and superstition. Squeamish - beware. It is not a book for you. (Kirkus Reviews)
