O knihe
Mining operations in Ghana since the mid- 1980s have experienced an important shift, from predominantly state-controlled to private ownership. The change has had major implications for companies & their relationships with resource communities. Communities look to companies for employment and development assistance as compensation for mining on community lands. There is general dissatisfaction among community members when these expectations are not realized. This discontent is threatening community acceptance of mining investment in resource communities. The study identified factors which define acceptable relations with Newmont local communities. It also documented Newmont performance in meeting these expectations in order to gain and sustain social acceptance for its Ahafo project. The study revealed 10 community relationship aspirations which define a trusted and sustainable relationship with Ahafo communities. The study also revealed that Newmont Ahafo Mine has performed very well on the relationship aspirations. Despite the strong performance, Newmont's approval rating declined from the pre-mining time due to community discontent in the company's commitment to local employment.
