During a long residence in the west, the author has, from time to time, employed his pen in the discussion of various subjects relating to this region, and he has now done little more than to collect together the frag ments, which were scattered through the pages of periodical and other publications. It was due to himself thus to identify and resume his property - the more especially, as these writings have been freely used by a number of compilers, some of whom were not careful to acknowledge the debt, While others have misunderstood, or perverted, the author's mean ing.
