Human-elephant conflict is a key issue in the conservation of the vulnerable African elephant (loxodonta Africana) in Sub-Saharan regions. Shimba Hills ecosystem in South coast Kenya, is one area where various mitigation measure have been tried since the 1980s' and yet the problem still persists. This book explores the key drivers to the intensity of conflicts in the area. Questionnaires, focused group discussions and GIS were used to gather information on the status of the conflict, current mitigation measures in use and identification of the drivers of intensity in Shimba Hills Ecosystem. This study is useful for park managers and the local community around the protected areas in their effort to mitigate conflicts arising from human-elephant interactions.
