O knihe
Iant Evans from a small village in North Wales is initially caught up in the glamour of volunteering to fight for his country in the World War One. The mass training camps disabuse Iant of the romance of war but here he has his first sexual experience with a woman, Clara.
Iant's posting is to Greece where the experience of Salonika and the climate are overwhelming. Blinded by gas, Iant is treated by Sara, a Greek nurse. They fall passionately for each other. When Iant is repatriated, he promises to come back.
Iant's return to his small village threatens to crush his spirit. His two sisters become engaged and when his father dies suddenly of a stroke, he feels that he has an obligation to care for his mother. Sara and Iant agree that they have no choice but to give up on their plan to reunite.
Iant takes work as a signalman. His life is at a low point when he meets a Welsh girl, Nancy, who inevitably reminds him of Sara. They marry, have children and their life is reasonably content, though Iant has kept a green ring that Sara gave him. Nancy finds this after some years of marriage threatening their contentment . Eventually, they find a way of making peace with this uncovering of the strongest passion of Iant's life.
A terrible accident on the station where Iant is in charge, nearly destroys him. He dies young, buried on the day that the Second World War breaks out.
