Global concern over disappearing wildlife species led to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), in 1973. CITES represents a new attitude towards international attempt in protecting endangered species fauna and flora in the wild. This book examined the international legal regime for the protection of wildlife and endangered species fauna and flora and the challenges of implementation in developing countries. It presented the breadth and variety of wildlife protection laws and approaches adopted at the global level to protect wildlife. Also examined is the link between wildlife protection and the concept of sustainable development, problems of implementation, enforcement and national jurisdiction. Further objective examined include the public trust doctrine, common law, land use, case law, constitutional conflicts and their effect on wildlife protection, and the nature of the duties and obligations placed on national governments as parties and stakeholders to these treaties and Conventions, and the actions required for their implementation.
