O knihe
Josef Albers' series of works Homage to the Square is central to art after 1945. Here the focus is on the lead-up in the 1940s, which is marked by his encounter with old Mexican art, and then on the development of the series from 1950-when he painted the first "square" in the summer of that year-to his death in 1976. How does his feeling for color change over this period of more than 25 years, and how does his concrete use of color as a material develop?
This look at the subtle language of Albers' painting leads to the secret of the artist's seemingly simple approach. For hardly anyone today questions the aesthetic status of his Homage to the square, which seems too self-evident. The aesthetic preconditions, however, remain mostly in the dark. What is actually the meaning of the square for Albers, and is it really exclusively about a conversation between colors? Is not color, in addition to its sensual richness, also the medium for visualizing questions of a representation of pictorial space that ultimately seems paradoxical?
The book is conceived as a landmark work on an important topic in the history of art after 1945: It addresses Albers in light of the many impulses he received early on in Europe and later in Mexico, and at the same time misses the multi-layered impact of his art in the U.S. and Europe since the 1960s of the 20th century.
An artist, educator, and color theorist, JOSEF ALBERS (1888-1976) was also a pioneer of twentieth-century modernism. He is known for his comprehensive series of works, Homage to the Square (1950-76) and taught at the Bauhaus, Black Mountain College, and at Yale University.
HEINZ LIESBROCK (*1953) is Director of the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat in Bottrop. He has written extensively on Albers and his impact on art, as well as on Edward Hopper, Walker Evans, and others.
