Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942), the creator of Anne of Green Gables and author of more than 20 books, is a household name the world over. When Maud was 21 months old, her mother died of tuberculosis and she was raised by her grandparents. As an only child living with an elderly couple, Montgomery found companionship in her imagination, nature, books, and especially writing. Her passion for writing gave her strength to face the many difficult times in her life.
