O knihe
Excerpt from The Earl of Chatham
When Macaulay first conceived the idea of writing a consecutive history, he proposed that it should deal with the whole riod between the Revolution and the death of George V. This heroic design was necessarily curtailed as advancing years impressed on him the limitations of human energy, and as he realised how slow must be the rate of progress in a work which would satisfy his high standards of thoroughness and finish. After fifteen years of strenuous labour he makes the confession: I should be glad to finish William before I go. The wish was realised, and a sixth part of the work originally planned was completed, in the last days of his life.
