Alkan war ein Piano-Virtuose von beachtlichen technischen Fähigkeiten und zugleich ein sehr zurückgezogener Mensch, der nur selten ausserhalb seiner Geburtsstadt auftrat und nur wenig für andere Instrumente als das Piano schrieb. Hauptsächlich erinnert man sich an Alkan als einen Komponisten, der mit seinen Werken Pianisten bis ins Extremste forderte, doch er zeichnet sich auch durch seine seltene Fähigkeit aus, klare Aussagen zu machen, wie mit seinem Marche.
