Prussia, and I had to march about ten kilometers thus equipped. I had hiked with heavy packs in France, but this hike excelled for length any twenty kilometer hike, or so it seemed.
As we were passing through Alsace, there were many French people in every doorway, and when they learned that the prisoners were Americans, the women and girls wept bitterly, for they well knew what fate was in store for those who had the ill luck to be captives among the Huns.
