Jo's college special education dept. professors lectures were about how identified labeled students experiences were reminder of her pre-college days life in the segregated south and being prevented much interaction. She was determined not to become her students, "baby sitter" as how their records described their earlier school experiences replacing their academic needs according to basic skills diagnostic testing results. "Special" Jo found her students, but not to mean "different. " She had four children at home and would say, " My students are just as special to me."
