This alphabetized listing of Newington residents was derived from the 1880 census record. Since Newington had been a part of Wethersfield, Connecticut up until 1871, this is the first census of the people of Newington. The majority of the listed information is taken from that record. Chapters include: Newington Residents 1880, Non-Resident Tax Levy 1880, Newington Tax Levy Totals, Newington Happenings 1880, Newington Deeds 1880, and Town Selectmen Report 1880. A bibliography completes this work.
The 1880 census for Newington was completed on June 1st and certified on 26 June 1880. There were 934 residents, 109 farms, one smith (blacksmith) and two manufacturers. To maintain continuity of the record the author used the dwelling number(s) and family number(s) as they appear on the census record. There are a number of instances where there is a break in the numbering of both dwelling and family numbers which in some cases leads to different families with the same dwelling or family number. Additionally, the spelling of names was taken directly from the census so some names may appear to be misspelled. The individuals shown without a birth location were born in Connecticut per the census record. Occupations for women were typically listed as either "keeping house" or "at home." Those with different occupations were shown. Typically children aged ten or older attended school and are noted that way. Individuals designated as "idiotic or insane" are marked as such on the regular census, paupers are not.
All deed references were obtained from a search of the Newington land records. Some deeds contain multiple parcels of land as well as land in other towns. The acreage of the land in Newington is listed if noted in the deed. These deeds were all recorded in the year 1880. A number of these records are dated prior to 1880 but not recorded in Newington until that year. The deeds that were dated prior to 1871 were likely recorded in Wethersfield, as Newington was a part of that town until that year.
Most of the items in the 1880 Tax Levy that were assessed are self-explanatory. There is a separate entry that totals the entire Newington Tax Levy for 1880.
All of the burials listed on these permits are for the Church Street or Newington Cemeteries. When a burial permit was issued and no headstone located, it is noted.
The marriages and baptisms noted all took place in the Congregational Church in Newington. The names, dates, locations, and spellings were taken verbatim from this record. In some cases the names on the census record differ from the baptism or marriage records, the varied spellings are noted.
