A politically divided community in a small Midwestern town is thrown into the global energy conflict when a biologist is found murdered in a popular state park. Jack Calaway, a county detective who has been assigned to the case, calls in the F.B.I. for assistance. When Miranda Fetting, a young F.B.I. agent, arrives on the scene, she already suspects a well-connected international mining company with its sights on extracting copper from the area is behind the killing. The two detectives briefly butt heads but then forge an alliance to work together amid political turmoil affecting each of their department's willingness to investigate the mining company. As political pressure intensifies to cease the investigation to avoid uncovering the depth of the corruption, the two detectives form a deeper affection for one another and find an unlikely ally in a woman named Doris. With help from Doris and a bookish environmentalist who has been framed for the murder, Miranda and Jack enter the fight of their lives to solve the murder and re-establish the rule of law to the fractured community of Clearwater.
