On Verity's Account is set mainly in Wanstead, East London. Verity Davis, the principal character, is approaching her eightieth birthday. But before this important celebration Verity has to surmount several problems, including those concerning her family. Knowing that she is extremely wealthy, her family frequently asks her for interest- free loans. "Let's put it on Verity's Account" is a well-worn phrase.
