Ego depletion refers to the idea that self- regulation or will is based on the limited sources of mental energy that are reduced when they are used. Hence, when these sources of mental energy are reduced, self-control becomes weak. The word "ego" in "ego depletion" is used in the "psychological" sense rather than the colloquial sense. Self-regulation is the capacity of the self for controlling behaviors, which increases the flexibility and adaptability of human behavior in different social contexts and situations.
