This book is written for software product teams that use AI to add intelligent models to their products or are planning to use it. As the AI adoption is growing, it is becoming important that all AI driven products are able to demonstrate that they are not introducing any bias to the decisions they are making as well as that they are reducing any pre-existing bias or discrimination.

The responsibility to ensure that the AI models are free of bias and make responsible decisions does not lie with the data scientists alone. The product owners and the business analysts are as important in ensuring bias free AI as the data scientists in the team and we have tried to address the part that these roles play in building the fair and explainable models. Each chapter in the book covers the fundamentals for the topic and then goes deep into the subject matter - which is aimed to provide the details that the business analysts and the data scientists to be able to implement these fundamentals.

The product owners will benefit the most by the introductions, conclusions for the book and each chapter. Most of the chapters also have notes sections throughout to cover the topic in progress for all audiences.

The AI research is one of the most active and growing areas of computer science research and to make sure that the book is useful for our readers, we have included many techniques that draw from the research or are created by combining different research outputs. We have covered some of the techniques from the popular libraries as they are relevant, but we have deliberately not drawn very heavily from them as they are already fairly well documented, and the new research is quite likely to replace some of it.
