But the advantages of anonymous political and literary criticism far outweigh the disadvantages. So much do they outweigh them that one regrets that, of late years, the world has been informed about many of the persons who write for, and nearly all those who manage, the London press. But if such writing ceases to be anonymous, it will either lose its liveliness, or engender strong personal animosities. Few Englishmen would, I imagine, care to see the system of the French press introduced among us, with its brag, its mendacity, its malignity. It is one thing to be attacked by a system, a company, a joint-stock proprietary, another to be always jostling against a man who gets his living by disparaging your reputation, and distorting your utterances.
