This book is intended as a reader for students who have covered the elements of French grammar. The average student of French comes to the study of the language with very few ideas about France, her people, her traditions, her heroes, her legends, or anything that makes for a back ground or an interest to direct or inspire his study of the language. It would seem worth while, early in the work, to give him some cultural interest in the country whose language he is attempting to learn; to lead him beyond the four walls of the classroom; to broaden his vision by awakening his interest in the life of another people; and to give him a few.general ideas which may induce him to extend his studies. He cannot, early in his course, read French books of literary merit which will give him the ideals and spirit of the country. Frequently a knowledge of France and her people comes only after years of study, whereas such knowledge, even in very simple form, if preceding a reading of literature, would broaden the student's comprehension and make his reading richer and more profitable.
