When the people of Israel rejected God as their King, and demanded a human king, God chose Saul. But once Saul became king, he let it go to his head; he stopped consulting the Lord; and he followed his own counsel. When Saul failed as king, the Lord took the kingdom from him, and anointed David to be the new king.
We learn from 1 Samuel that when God gives a person a task to fulfill, He expects that person to seek His guidance on a regular basis! This applied to king Saul, to the future king David, and correspondingly, to each of God's children today!
