It is a book of short stories, set amid a strange world of fairies, banshees', giants and many creatures of myth. There are fewer moral lessons than in many more recent fairy stories, and more a tone of older folklore. All the tales within have some connection with a spirit known only as "the fay queen," or "the Lady". Who or what she is, is never made clear, but she is undoubtedly a creature of good nature.
