Magnus Trygg, temporarily in charge of the High Coast district, is called out to a body with a knife in its back. August Frisk, who alerted him, insists he's never seen the man before, and the others living there agree. The only suspect is Paulus, a Sami reindeer herder who flees to the White Sea where the Russian authorities prove uncooperative. Inspector Amrn suggests the case be suspended until he can be questioned.
But Magnus, eager to prove himself, carries on probing. He's sensed hidden tensions at Frisk's and, his own marriage in crisis, he's powerfully drawn to August's daughter-in-law, Hanna.
