O knihe

The paper presents data on the impact of environmental mutagens on the health of the population in some regions of Georgia. The impact of ionizing radiation on residents living near the detected radioactive sources has been studied. By means of biodosimetry the absorbed dose was determined and the risk group was allocated. The monitoring revealed heterogeneous response of different persons to identical radiation doses received, indicating the importance of individual sensitivity of exposed persons. Exposure to a chemical mutagen was studied in a mountainous region of Georgia where the atmosphere was contaminated with arsenic. The health of children from this region was investigated. A significant delay in physical development and an increased incidence of several diseases were found. The association with the mutagenic effects of arsenic was confirmed by cytogenetic studies and a parallel finding of increased arsenic levels in the blood, urine and hair of those examined.
