O knihe
A high demand for land in urban Ghana resulting from a high rural-urban migration has heightened the commercialization of urban lands. The high value placed on land has influenced land ownership, acquisition, and transfers. The prospect to make money off the sale or lease of lands has influenced a number of conflicts between families, and individuals regarding ownership issues. The attempt to protect lands has carved a place for 'land guards' who exist mainly to meet a demand for land protection services in urban Ghana. Land management policy in many developing nations has been riddled with conflict because of competing for land tenure systems. Having transitioned through customary tenure systems to bureaucratic property rights regimes without a complete shift from the former, Ghana's land management system, over time, has witnessed administrative challenges such that some desperate land protection schemes are taking root, including the use of unregulated security land guards in peri-urban areas. The aim of this study is to examine the phenomenon of land guards' activities and their threats to the security of residents of Kasoa enclave.
