Otis Clayton Sr writes the significance of a multigenerational memoir that delineates a trajectory for him to develop his own political theology. He insists that religion is useful as a means to achieve public policy objectives strategically and ultimately through nonviolent direct action. He begins the first chapter which depicts his formative early childhood years during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and continues up to the present. His fraternal grandfather and other ancestors communicate to him that, although he lived in a segregated society, he needs to pursue at all costs a quality education. This mindset is reflected in his succeeding chapters. He writes chapters two through chapter eight as epistolary letters written to family members and friends to explain his thinking about family, history, theology, and philosophy.
